A $269 Tripod That Can Do This?

A $269 Tripod That Can Do This?

Tripods get super expensive very quickly, and if you are a full-time pro, you will most definitely be familiar with the price tags. If video is something you are trying out, or just doing for fun, you may also need a tripod—a tripod that is lightweight and has enough features.

Beginner photographers and videographers share a great struggle—finding gear that is both budget-friendly and also functional. There are a lot of products out there, and the choice paralysis has never been stronger. The case could not be more valid for tripods.

I tested out the Ulanzi GlideGo JJ06, and while it won’t replace professional cinema equipment, it will be a great choice for those of us who want to get into video without breaking the bank or need a tripod that will be feature-packed without being too pricey.

JJ05 Versus the JJ06

The tripod comes in two shades: the JJ05 Travel Tripod and the JJ06 Video Tripod. What makes them different? The key answer is in the head. The first one is a ball head tripod, better for photography needs, while the second one is better suited for video work, though it can also be used as a photo tripod. The difference is that the JJ06 has a video head built into the ball head.

The JJ05 is lighter, coming in at 1.56 kg. The JJ06 is only marginally heavier—1.76 kg. It is also a few cm taller when collapsed; however, in my opinion, neither of these would be a big difference, and you should get the one you need rather than the one that is smaller or lighter—they are both very compact and lightweight. Both of these tripods are made from carbon fiber and are CNC machined, which gives the tripod a really nice feel.

Features That Matter

Naturally, both tripods become far more interesting when we start talking about their features and what they can do for you as a photographer, videographer, or content creator.

First up, it makes overhead shooting very simple. The dual-stage, no-remove center column lets you switch to horizontal mode without taking the tripod apart. It’s that simple. This feature is perfect for flat-lay photography or videography. Next time you need to film any kind of unboxing video or just a top-down shot, the Ulanzi GlideGo JJ06 will be your best friend!

It doesn’t stop here—the tripod is called GlideGo for a reason. That reason is that it allows you to execute panning shots without a hassle. The setup rotates 360°, enabling you to capture really creative angles of whatever it is that you are filming.

The dual-stage center column also allows you to get as low as possible with your composition without compromising stability.

The JJ06 also features a tilt head, which allows you to capture tilt shots from -50° to +60°.

A super cool feature I don’t think I’ve seen before is the built-in screwdriver head. The tripod comes with 7 interchangeable bits, making rigging and setting up much easier. I wish more companies did this, as this ensures that you are able to screw on a plate without worries.

Both tripods feature the Ulanzi Uka Quick-Release Kit, compatible with Uka and F38 plates. The Uka system, an improved version of the Arca-Swiss quick-release, replaces the traditional knob lock with a mechanical clip for faster, more efficient setup—perfect for photographers and videographers on the go.

Build and Adjustability

The carbon fiber legs feature a quick-release mechanism via flip locks—this way, the tripod is able to go from travel mode to shooting mode very quickly. I enjoyed using these locks actually; they have a super nice feel to them and seem to be quite stable.

The JJ06 is able to go up to 187 cm, making it quite a good option if you are interested in high angles. And, of course, with the ability to shoot on the ground, your effective range is 0–187 cm.

Closing Thoughts

The Ulanzi GlideGo JJ06 (and the JJ05 if you’re more photo-focused) isn’t going to replace a set of professional sticks, but that’s not the point. This is a tripod designed for beginners, hobbyists, and anyone who needs something lightweight, versatile, and affordable without diving into pro-level gear costs.

It offers a surprising number of features for the price—overhead shooting without fuss, smooth panning options, a solid quick-release system, and even a built-in screwdriver that makes setting up easier. It’s compact, easy to carry, and goes up to 187 cm, which is impressive for something this portable.

If you’re starting to experiment with video, creating content for social, or just need a capable travel tripod that won’t blow your budget, the GlideGo series is worth considering. For me, it’s not replacing my main tripod on set, but for everyday tasks or behind-the-scenes shooting, it absolutely makes sense.
